Plecostomus

young female severum
August 2003

Plecostomus have a disc shaped mouths that is part suction cup and loaded with little comb teeth made to scrape algae from rock, plant and glass surfaces. These fish are very useful in a tank but can grow very large and if they are hungry can destroy plants and kill other fish. The Pleco is from an ancient family of fish that have not changed in millions of year. The fish is equipped with very spiny fins and scales that deter attacks from other fish.
